Glued construction is the one to watch for. Lockstitch versus saddle stitch
A sewing machine makes a lockstitch: a top thread and a bobbin thread loop around each other inside the leather. It's fast and it's continuous, which is also the problem. A hand saddle stitch uses one thread with a needle at each end, both passing through the same hole from opposite sides. Every stitch locks itself. What Stitchless Construction Removes
Four things, and each one is a component that can fail independently.

That last one gets overlooked. A stitch line is a row of holes punched through the leather, running along the edge where the wallet flexes most. The thread fills them, but the leather is still perforated there. Remove the stitching and the panel stays whole across its full width.
The lining point matters as much. A wallet with no lining has no bond line between leather and fabric, so there's nothing to delaminate — the thing you're carrying is leather all the way through, front to back.

How a Stitchless Card Holder Fails
At the fold. Every time, given enough years, and there's no maintenance that prevents it — only maintenance that slows it down.
When leather bends repeatedly in the same place, the fiber structure gives way. Five Checks Before You Buy
All five take under a minute, and none of them require trusting the product description.
- Find the joins. Look along every edge for stitch holes, a glue line, or a hardware seat. If you can't find any of the three, it's genuinely a folded one-piece. If you find a glue line, the adhesive is doing structural work and the wallet will delaminate.
- Check the leather weight. Folded construction needs enough body to hold its shape without a lining. Weaver Leather Supply's weight chart puts 4–5 oz at roughly 1.5–2 mm, standard pouch weight (Weaver Leather Supply, retrieved 2026-08-07). Much thinner than that and the fold won't hold; much thicker and it won't fold cleanly. If the leather is a wax pull-up such as Crazy Horse, expect the crease to read lighter than the panels around it. That is wax displaced by the fold rather than damage, and it rubs back with warmth and friction.
- Look at the cut edge. A burnished edge is the leather's own fibers compressed and polished, so it can't peel. Painted edges are a separate coating on top, and coatings crack when the leather underneath flexes at a different rate. - Ask what's on the inside. If there's a lining, there's a bond line. No lining means nothing to peel away from the leather.
