Apple publishes a tech specs page for each generation. Put them side by side and the size section is word for word identical.
The weight is the one specification that did change. The 2021 AirTag is listed at 0.39 ounce, or 11 grams. The 2026 model is listed at 0.42 ounce, or 11.8 grams.
Eight tenths of a gram is not a fit problem. It is less than the weight of a single house key, and no closure on the market is tuned finely enough to notice it.
What Actually Changed Inside
Three things, and only one of them has anything to do with what you carry the tag in.
The speaker is louder
Apple's stated figure is 50% louder than the previous generation, with the tag audible from up to twice the distance. There is a new chime as well.
For anyone using a case of any kind, this is the meaningful upgrade. Every closed cover sits between the speaker and your ear, and a louder source has more to give away before that becomes a problem.
The Ultra Wideband chip is second generation
The original used Apple's U1 chip. The new one uses a second-generation Ultra Wideband chip, which Apple says extends Precision Finding range by up to 50%.
Read the requirements before you get excited. Apple's specs state that expanded Precision Finding needs an iPhone Air or an iPhone 15 or later, and it excludes the iPhone 16e and 17e. On an older phone you keep the tag's other improvements, not this one.
The shell is 85% recycled plastic
Apple lists 85% recycled plastic in the enclosure. It changes nothing about how the tag sits in a holder, but it is the third of the three real differences and worth naming so the list is complete.
What Does a Louder Speaker Mean for a Leather Holder?
It gives back some of what any cover takes away, and we would rather be specific about that than pretend a leather case is acoustically invisible.
It is not. Leather is a dense, fibrous material, and a closed holder puts a layer of it directly over a small speaker. Sound gets quieter. The same is true of a silicone sleeve, a plastic shell, or the inside of a jacket pocket, and any brand telling you otherwise is describing a material that does not exist.
What has changed is the headroom. Apple doubled the distance at which the tag can be heard, so the cover now eats into a larger budget than it did before.
We have not put a decibel meter to our own holders, so we are not going to publish a number. What we can give you is the test, which takes less time than reading this paragraph.
What Did Not Change, and Why It Matters
Three carry-overs decide more about your daily experience than any of the upgrades.
- There is still no attachment hole. Apple did not add one in 2021 and did not add one in 2026. A bare AirTag cannot be attached to anything, which is the whole reason the holder category exists.
- The battery is still a user-replaceable CR2032. You will open the tag roughly once a year, so how easily your holder releases it is a design question worth asking before you buy.
- The rating is still IP67. Apple tests to a maximum depth of 1 metre for up to 30 minutes under IEC 60529, and notes that the resistance is not permanent and can decrease with normal wear. Leather has no rating at all, and it will darken and stiffen if you soak it.
That first point deserves a moment. A tracker with no mounting point is an unusual design decision, and it is deliberate: Apple sells the accessory separately. Every holder on the market, ours included, exists to solve a hole Apple chose not to drill.
Should You Upgrade?
For most people carrying a tag on their keys, no. The 2021 AirTag still reports its position on the same Find My network and still works with the same accessories.
Three situations make the case for it:
- Your tag lives inside something dense. A checked bag, a car boot, a stuffed rucksack. The louder speaker is aimed squarely at this.
- You use Precision Finding often and own a compatible iPhone. The extended range is real, with the phone requirements above.
- Your existing tag is due a battery anyway. Weigh the cost of a CR2032 against a new tag if the old one has taken a hard life.
If none of those apply, keep the tag you have. Your holder does not care which generation is inside it, and that is the whole point of this article.
How to Check Your Own Holder in Thirty Seconds
Fit is only half of it. A holder can accept the tag and still fail you, so run these three checks on whatever you are carrying now.
- The shake test. Close the holder, hold it at head height, and shake it hard for five seconds. Anything that rattles will eventually work its way out. This is the check that catches a stretched silicone sleeve before it costs you a tag.
- The sound test. Open Find My, tap Play Sound, and walk away until you cannot hear it. Do it again with the tag out of the holder. The difference between those two distances is what your cover costs you, measured on your tag, in your house.
- The battery test. Take the tag out and put it back. If that took tools or two hands and a swear word, you will resent it in about eleven months.
None of these require buying anything. If your current holder passes all three, the new AirTag changes nothing for you.
What We Make, and Which One Suits Which Test
We build three, and they sit at different points on that trade between access and security.
The v1.0 is cut from Crazy Horse leather, which is a wax-and-oil pull-up finish rather than a grade or a tannage. It is the easiest of the three to get the tag in and out of, which is exactly what some people want and exactly what others do not.
The v2.0 closes with a metal screw lock and hangs from a brass carabiner. The v3.0 goes further: the keyring itself holds the holder shut, so the tag cannot come out until the ring comes off. It is cut from full grain vegetable tanned leather, which is the only kind that develops a real patina.
